Special Animal Facilities
There are several specialized animal housing locations at UCSD designed to isolate or quarantine rodents from sources with questionable health history, provide barrier housing for immune-compromised rodents or house animals used in biohazardous studies.
Vivarium Use
To maintain animal colonies under safe and healthy conditions, specific requirements for the use of all UCSD vivaria must be observed by all personnel involved in animal research.
Veterinary Health
Provides veterinary support to UCSD faculty and staff for campus animal activities Ensures the humane care and use of animals used in research and teaching as mandated by federal, state and local animal welfare regulations Assures that all campus animal activities are conducted within the goals of the UniversityResources to carry out these goals include a staff of veterinarians and veterinary technicians. Reference materials, including a library devoted to laboratory animal medicine and experimentation, and specialized equipment are available for use by members of the research staff. A veterinary diagnostic lab, technical services and special programs to promote animal health and support research are available.
Laboratory Services
The Animal Care Program Diagnostic Laboratory has basic veterinary hematology, serology, chemistry, microbiology, parasitology, histopathology, and other special services available for researchers at UCSD. Consultations and Customization are available. All services requested must be submitted with the Laboratory Service Requisition Form.
Training
To assist investigators and to meet the requirements of federal, state and local agencies, the Animal Care Program provides technical training to investigators and their staff members in areas related to animal health and experimental procedures. Training classes, seminars and wet labs are offered throughout the year. Instruction can be provided for newly hired employees, as refresher courses for present staff members, or to address new topics as they arise. Staff members may attend the general classes offered, or training can be customized to meet the needs of individual laboratories. Click here to go to the ACP Training website.
