Hematology
Basic CBC includes; WBC w/Differential, RBC, RBC Indices, Hemoglobin, PCV, Platelet count, MPV. The cost of a CBC with a differential smear is $17.50/sample (charges are based on reagent costs; subject to change). For best results: We recommend that you meet the recommended tube volume, so the proportion of blood to EDTA will be correct. (We can perform the test on as little as 60µl, but it would be one shot with no margin for error or double checks) We recommend that the blood be brought to the lab as soon as possible after the draw; the fresher the blood the better your results. Do Not mix anticoagulants. If the animal has heparin on board then use heparin tubes. Keep in mind that heparin will cause more platelet clumping, tends to cause RBC swelling (may cause inconsistencies in Automated analysis results) and may distort WBC morphology. Recommendation for Blood Collection with EDTA Materials:
Place 5µl of 0.17M EDTA solution into the tapered end of a Natelson blood collection tube. Hold tube near the tapered – end between thumb and forefinger, and then flick your wrist so that the EDTA coats the entire tube. (It is O.K. if some EDTA is ejected out of the tube). This tube is now prepared for use to collect blood to be drained into an EDTA sample tube. Cap the sample collection tube, if the tube uses a powder form of EDTA, flick the tube on the side a couple of times (to start the mixing) then gently rock it to mix the blood fully with the anti-coagulant. Flicking the tube is not needed for liquid EDTA tubes, gentle rocking will do it. We recommend against placing tubes on ice or in refrigeration; the cold will weaken the cell membranes which may cause inconsistencies in automated analysis, lyse cells and/or increases smudge cells. New information indicates that hematology samples can be left at room temperature (not in the sun or heated area) for up to 8 hours with out negative effects.
