Animal Care Program Rodent Receiving Policy

OBJECTIVE: To receive animals for UCSD approved research while preventing any unknown health risk from being brought into any of the UCSD Vivaria.

  • Receiving of Unscheduled Animal Shipments

    • Any shipment that is not on the Delivery Schedule will not be housed. While disposition is being determined, rodent containers will be isolated outside of the vivaria.
    • ACP staff will contact the Animal Acquisitions Coordinator (ext. 44263) for instruction .
    • If the animals were not shipped from an approved commercial source, the Animal Acquisitions Coordinator will contact The Animal Transfer Coordinator (ext. 20083).
    • The ATC will meet with veterinary staff to determine disposition of animals.
    • The Animal Transfer Coordinator (ext.20083) will contact the Principal Investigator or his/her staff of determined outcome of shipment.
    • The Animal Transfer Coordinator will contact the Vivarium supervisor of disposition of shipment.

    Possible Outcomes:
    • Unscheduled animals with orders placed through Animal Acquisitions from commercial, approved vendors (common strains) may be housed after checking with The Animal Acquisitions Coordinator (ext. 44263).
    • Unscheduled Non-commercial APPROVED Animals - may be housed after informing the Principal Investigator depending on pre-determined health status and status of shipping container on arrival. The Principal Investigator will be assessed a special handling fee for unscheduled arrivals of approved animals.
    • Unscheduled arrivals of non-commercial UNAPPROVED animals will be maintained for 24-72 hours in the shipping box outside of all vivaria while background information is collected. If information is unavailable, animals will be either housed in the RIU or euthanized at the Investigator’s expense, after Principal Investigator is notified.

  • Receiving of Animals in Compromised Shipping Containers

    • It is imperative for ACP staff to note any damage on the bill of laden before signing for any animal containers. Place rodent containers on the small rack outside vivarium, in designated area. Call the Animal Acquisitions Coordinator (ext.44263).
    • The Animal Acquisitions Coordinator will notify the Animal Transfer Coordinator (ext.20083).
    • Commercial Vendors: Commonly available animals will be euthanized and vendor will replace. The Animal Acquisitions Coordinator (ext.44263) will arrange for replacement of common commercial animals when possible.
    • Commercial animals that are uncommonly available or Non-commercial vendor with a PRE- APPROVED request: The Animal Transfer Coordinator (ext. 20083) will call the PI and offer the choice of short term housing in the RIU (under the guidelines established for this facility, providing space is available), euthanasia, or rederivation by the Core Facility.

QUESTIONS SHOULD BE DIRECTED TO THE ACP OPERATIONS MANAGER (ext. 47506)
