Animal Health Issues

Sick animals should be reported directly to the ACP veterinary staff at extension 43628. There are 23 locations approved for animal housing at U.C.S.D. All animals at each facility are observed every day of the year. Personnel caring for these animals include trained animal husbandry technicians, registered veterinary technicians, laboratory technicians and researchers and veterinarians. Report medical emergencies, signs of illness or abnormal behavior to an ACP Veterinary Technician at ext. 43628. Medical emergencies may also be reported through the campus police department (44357), if necessary. In addition to health related problems, ACP veterinarians and technicians are available to discuss colony health or management issues.

During weekends, holidays and after regular working hours, veterinary technicians and veterinarians are available by telephone for animal health problems. The phone numbers for veterinary staff members "on-call" each week are posted in every vivaria. Physical plant emergencies (leaking pipes, no water, etc.) should be reported to the RVT on call and to the husbandry supervisor.
