Preventive Veterinary Care

In addition to daily observations and treatment of animals reported with a medical problem, the veterinary staff provides routine preventive health care for animals involved in long-term, chronic studies. Such care includes periodic physical examinations, regular TB testing of non-human primates, vaccinations when appropriate, prophylactic parasiticide treatment, annual hematological and serological testing of larger animals, nail or hoof care, and review of the animal's environment. Annual physicals are routinely performed on animals larger than rabbits, at a nominal recharge to the investigator.

The ACP veterinary staff maintains a minimally stocked pharmacy designed to be at the disposal of veterinary staff. In emergencies or when sick animals require medication, the dispensation of pharmaceuticals is available on a recharge basis, only after veterinary consultation is sought.
Controlled Drugs are not available through the ACP; they must be purchased through the purchasing department and in accordance with their protocol. UCSD Purchasing can be reached at extension 44439.
